History Animated

Posted by joycevalenza on May 16th, 2011

If, like me, you have a few students and teachers who fancy themselves fill-in-the-blank war buffs, if the Civil War, World War II, and the Revolutionary War are part of your curriculum, you’re going to want to share HistoryAnimated.

The site brings to life those dashed and dotted line maps to depict key naval and land battles using graphics, text, sound, and animations.  So much more effective and so much more scalable than those static pull-down shade maps! Not every battle is included, but the folks at HistoryAnimated appear to be adding battles on a regular basis.

In addition to the animated maps (with their play commands and timelines), you’ll find descriptions of events with sources, photographs of the major players, and links to recommended books and films.

No registration is necessary to use, but registered users get alerts regarding additions and updates.

  1. I 100% agree. Our organization refers classrooms to this site often. Interactive learning does not get much better than this. As a national nonprofit we work with many historical organizations across the country, both large and small. James and the staff who creates these detailed animations are wonderful to work with and the research that goes into them is very thorough.
