As part of our participation in this month’s Manga Moveable Feast—which is focused on manga for children, specifically Yotsuba&! by Kiyohiko Azuma (published by Yen Press)—we thought we’d speak with Traci Todd, Senior Editor of VIZ Kids. Traci started at VIZ in May of 2008. Before that she was a children’s editor at Chronicle Books for three years. She also spent several years in educational publishing, and started her career as a writer for You Don’t Know Jack and its educational sister That’s a Fact, Jack!

As summer vacation winds down, it’s time to take a look at what books the Good Comics for Kids bloggers were tucking into their beach bags or dropping into the pool this week.

Kate Dacey: I recently finished The Sons of Liberty, a supernatural adventure set in the Revolutionary War era. The first in a projected series, Sons focuses on two runaway slaves who acquire super-strength after Benjamin Franklin’s son conducts a nasty experiment on them. As the boys learn how to control their powers, they… Read More

The summer doldrums continue as the all ages list falls into a familiar pattern of weekly releases. Archie, Boom! Studios and DC have all their regulars of Archie, Sonic, Disney, Muppets and Superheroes coming out. Marvel is taking its sweet time getting its kid’s line back up and running with just Spider-Man. And the second volume of Chi’s Sweet Home is out from Vertical! More kitten-y goodness! In the picks it’s a new superhero and some old detectives, but all good reads!

The List:

ARCHIE COMICS
Betty & Veronica #249, $2.99
Jugheads Double Digest #163, $3.99
Sonic The… Read More

Johanna Draper Carlson asks an interesting question at Comics Worth Reading: How frequently should children’s comics appear?

Some of my all-time favorite comics are graphic novel series for kids, such as Owly or Amelia Rules!, but I’m an adult, and waiting anywhere from six months to two years for a new installment is nothing for me. I’m not sure kids have that much patience. When an original series like Amulet puts out a book every year, are kids still interested? Or does it depend on how old they are?

The problem, of course, is that kids age… Read More

I should be writing how much I hated Sonic Select. If anything that I’ve read lately has shown me that I’m getting old, these two volumes of Sonic Select have accomplished that. Read More

Review: Gabby & Gator

Katherine Dacey
Posted by Katherine Dacey on August 20th, 2010

Gabby is a shy vegetarian whose hobbies include recycling, gardening, and playing the tuba. Gator is, well, an alligator whose passtimes include blogging and snacking on housepets. Both feel lonely and misunderstood, she for having “uncool” interests, he for capitulating to his hunting instincts. When a football player from Gabby’s school steals her hat and mocks her, Gator intercedes on her behalf, thus initiating a sweet, if improbable, friendship.
