Writers Against Racism: Children’s Book Council Diversity Kickoff

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

I was honored to be invited to the Children’s Book Council Diversity Kickoff event tonight!!!  It’s such a wonderful and forward-thinking initiative that I asked CBC’s Executive Director, Robin Adelson, to share the vision and thoughts behind forming this committee.

“The newly formed CBC Diversity Committee is dedicated to increasing the diversity of voices and experiences contributing to children’s literature. The committee is charged with shaping an initiative that will focus on increasing diverse representation within the children’s book publishing industry, comprising those people who work

Writers Against Racism: Diversify Your Bulletin Boards by Joseph O. Iannacone

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

If you are a teacher, you know about those new year resolutions.  This year… I will LIVEN up my bulletin boards! I will be original! I WILL! I WILL! I WILL! Yeah. Yeah. And we never do.  SO, whenever I see a winning bulletin board, I do my best to squeeze them into Bowllan’s Blog.

Creating a bulletin board is truly a needle in my shoe and I bet there are other teachers in agreements.

Not this teacher. He’s pretty unique  and shares his bulletin board science.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Writers Against Racism: Reading on the Run

Thursday, August 11th, 2011
My son has been so diligent this summer as he prepares for his departure to boarding school (high school) in September.  *sniff*  He has been plowing through his summer reading books with a vengeance!  He’s such a hardworker but I can’t help but wonder if he’ll he ever develop a passion for pleasure reading?  He’s the kid who reads because he has to. (I guess most boys do?) It’s a part of his check off.  He LOVES to, what I call, TALKTHEBOOK OUT. Meaning….he talks/fleshes out the marrow of  the plot and the characters but I STILL don’t feel it’s pleasure. Maybe I’m wrong, or maybe with boys

So far so good, having finished round 2 of chemotherapy yesterday and a shot of neulasta today. Neulasta is a potent drug administered 24-hours after chemo to generate white bloods cells through the bone marrow.

Writers Against Racism: Bravo to SLJ!

    Friday, May 6th, 2011

    It is about inclusivity.

I was pleasantly surprised to see on the School Library Journal homepage, Newbery Books Lack Characters With Disabilities by Debra Lau Whelan.  “Although there have been more kids with disabilities portrayed in Newbery Medal-winning titles in recent years, there still remains a huge discrepancy between the number of characters in Newbery Award-winning books and how many children in the general population attend special education classes, says a new report.” (via SLJ article and Debra Lau Whelan)
